COUNTDOWN TO SMOKE FREE ENGLAND
From 6am on the 1st July 2007, the new smokefree law comes in to force. It is
one of the most important pieces of Public Health legislation ever to have come
in to effect.
On this date virtually all enclosed public places in England will become
smokefree by law.
The smokefree law is the biggest piece of Public Health legislation for 50 years
(since the Clean Air Act 1956) and will protect thousands of lives every year from
the dangers of second hand smoke.
Smokefree public places and workplaces will protect everyone from the harmful
effects of second hand smoke, therefore, recognizing a person’s right to be
protected from harm and enjoy smokefree air.
Employers, managers or anyone in charge of smokefree premises and vehicles
will need to display ‘No Smoking’ signs in smokefree premises. Most importantly,
they must ensure that staff, customers/members and visitors are aware that
premises and vehicles are legally required to be smokefree and therefore ensure
that no one smokes in smokefree premises and vehicles.
